IP Man: Kung Fu Master – (Blu-ray)

Ip Man Kung Fu Master is a direct to streaming movie released on Youku in China in late 2019. It is a fictionalized account of Ip Man’s stint as a police officer during the period of Japanese occupation prior to the Chinese Communist Revolution.

Aside from being inspired by real life Wang Chung master Ip Man, the film has nothing to do with the more well known and financially successful Ip Man series.

Don’t let that dissuade you, though, this movie has a lot going for it. The acting and sets are all very good, the costumes are fantastic, and the story it tells pits Ip as a masked vigilante, keeping people safe from a police force corrupted by Japanese Imperialists. It’s wildly ahistorical, but it’s a great time.
